Parking Lot Safety
Thank you for your cooperation in making our parking lot a little bit safer. We have noticed some reduction in congestion in the parking lot, making it easier for people to quickly drop off their children and leave the parking lot area. We have also noticed fewer cars parked in no parking zones, which is helping to reduce congestion and improve school bus service because the bus bay is available for buses. A reminder that “parking” means “the standing of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, except when standing temporarily for the purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading merchandise or passengers” (Highway Traffic Act)
We are still looking for further improvements in our parking lot situation and continue to work with the police, the city by-law office and our own security department. We have posted a No Stopping sign on the corner of the school near the library windows. The no stopping area covers the front of the school to the bus bay area. All bus bay areas are automatically no stopping areas.
Two other things that can further help improve parking lot safety are staggering drop-off and pick-up times and creating walking school buses. We have supervision in the morning that begins at 8:25. Teachers are on duty at the front, back and Saginaw Parkway side of the school. If you are dropping off children in grades 1 - 8 you can drop them off anytime between 8:25 and 8:40. The students will play in the same areas that they play in during nutrition breaks. In stormy and extremely cold (-20 degrees Celsius and below) weather students are invited to come into the school before the 8:40 bell. We have noticed that the peak congestion time is from 8:35 to 8:40. An earlier drop-off time, such as 8:30 would allow parents to leave the parking lot faster because there
will be less of a line up at the exit. After school, teachers are supervising until 3:10.
The walking school bus concept is simply the organization of adults taking turns walking to school with a group of students. More information can be found at www.walkingschoolbus.org.
